For months, inmates at dozens of prisons across the country have been organizing through a network of smuggled cellphones, social media pages, and the support of allies on the outside. The effort culminated in a mass refusal to report to prison jobs on September 9, the anniversary of the 1971 Attica prison uprising. “This is a call to action against slavery in America,” organizers wrote in anannouncement that for weeks circulated inside and outside prisons nationwide, and that sums up the strikers’ primary demand: an end to free prison labor. “Forty-five years after Attica, the waves of change are returning to America’s prisons. This September we hope to coordinate and generalize these protests, to build them into a single tidal shift that the American prison system cannot ignore or withstand.” Since Friday, details on the strike’s success have trickled out of prisons with some difficulty, but organizers and supporters have no doubt the scale of the action is unprecedented, though their assessment is difficult to verify and some corrections departments denied reports of strike-related activities in their states. Prisoners in 24 states and 40 to 50 prisons pledged to join the strike, and as of Tuesday, prisoners in at least 11 states and 20 prisons continued the protest, according to outside supporters in Alabama. Tactics and specific demands varied locally, with some prisoners reportedly staging hunger strikes, and detainees in Florida protesting and destroying prison property ahead of the planned strike date. “There are probably 20,000 prisoners on strike right now, at least, which is the biggest prison strike in history, but the information is really sketchy and spotty,” said Ben Turk, who works on “in-reach” to prisons for the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee, a chapter of the Industrial Workers of the World union helping to coordinate the inmate-led initiative from the outside.”* Read more here: https://theintercept.com/2016/09/16/the-largest-prison-strike-in-u-s-history-enters-its-second-week/ Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz, Ana Kasparian, Jimmy Dore Cast: Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz, Ana Kasparian, Jimmy Dore *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. With black flags waving, pots banging, and a banner that read "All Prisoners Are Political Prisoners," enough noise was made so that inmates would know they had support from the outside. The waves, peace signs, and messages we received back from the inmates were very inspiring. Heckling and rude comments from the police were met with noise, music, words about our purpose, and words about the oppression of the prison industrial complex. Chances are there is a detention facility in your area. This action should be repeated often and worldwide. Until every prison wall is torn down, none of us are free. Love, solidarity, and the power of people will always be stronger than the chains of the state.

Two Alabama prisons were put on lockdown last week after a coordinated labor strike in as many as five correctional facilities that began on Sunday, May 1. The strike has been organized by inmates from the “Free Alabama Movement” in an attempt to draw attention to inhumane living conditions and systemic deprivation within the state’s prisons. The protest’s leaders expect the work stoppage to last 30 days. We look at the prison labor strike on the Lip News with Melvin Robert and Elliot Hill. http://abcnews.go.com/US/alabama-prisons-enter-lockdown-heels-coordinated-labor-strike/story?id=38881139 Newest Lip News playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXbSkxVIMd4&index=1&list=PLPnLjoW07bV2hUGhMAd26ExGg93FzJAzQ&nohtml5=False The Journalists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWnCGALkFf0&index=1&list=PLjk3H0GXhhGfqe9hDJc8fi5qy-kDXW3r0&nohtml5=False CRIME TIME clips playlist – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr143vXWrpw&list=PLjk3H0GXhhGeC9DbpSnIvd2i9BHh2dBvv&index=1&nohtml5=False BYOD (Bring Your Own Doc) Highlight Videos- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAtgk6rZGmw&list=PLjk3H0GXhhGeu2DCf6Ouo7hTsA5QB2MAL&index=1&nohtml5=False MEDIA MAYHEM short videos playlist - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8QiHbI-YYY&index=1&list=PLjk3H0GXhhGcz4un-zws5sMlCLk3NNjDP&nohtml5=False http://www.thelip.tv https://www.facebook.com/thelip.tv http://www.youtube.com/theliptv

http://democracynow.org - Today prisoners in at least 24 states are set to participate in a nationally coordinated strike that comes on the 45th anniversary of the prison uprising at Attica. Much like the prisoners who took over New York’s infamous correctional facility in 1971, today’s prisoners are protesting long-term isolation, inadequate healthcare, overcrowding, violent attacks and slave labor. We feature an excerpt from our interview in May with one of the organizers, Kinetik Justice, who joined us by phone from solitary confinement in Holman Correctional Facility. He is co-founder of the Free Alabama Movement. He was serving his 28th month in solitary for organizing a similar protest in 2014. http://democracynow.org - We go behind bars to get an update on the end of a 10-day strike by Alabama prisoners to protest severe overcrowding, poor living conditions and the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which bans slavery and servitude “except as a punishment for crime,” thus sanctioning the legality of forced, unpaid prison labor. "These strikes are our methods of challenging mass incarceration, as we understand the prison system is a continuation of the slave system, which is an economic system," says Kinetik Justice, who joins us by phone from solitary confinement in Holman Correctional Facility. He is co-founder of the Free Alabama Movement and one of the organizers of the strike. He says organizers tried petitioning their conditions via the courts and lawmakers, but when they were unsuccessful, "we understood our incarceration was pretty much about our labor and the money that was being generated from the prison system, therefore we began organizing around our labor and used it as a means and a method to bring about reform in the Alabama prison system." http://democracynow.org - Prison officials in Alabama have confirmed a group of correction officers refused to report for the evening shift Saturday at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore. The apparent work strike comes as guards have been walking off the job amid safety concerns and overcrowding throughout the summer. Prisoners say there are stabbings on a regular basis, and call the facility "The Slaughterhouse." We speak to incarcerated organizer Kinetik Justice and Pastor Kenneth Glasgow, founder and national president of The Ordinary People Society. So far at least two inmates have died during a nationwide prison strike calling for the end of what organizers of the strike call “legalized slavery” within the prison system. One of the leaders of the Alabama prison strike movement, Kinetik Justice, has recently been transferred to a different facility where he is reportedly being denied water in his cell. RT America’s Anya Parampil speaks with Pastor Kenneth Glasgow, who has the latest on Justice’s condition. Strikes in what started across ten Georgia prisons have now become the biggest prisoner strike in the history of the US. Using cell phones to communicate, they named December 9th as the strike day, and refused to leave their cells, or perform any work. University of Baltimore's Jeffrey Ian Ross explains if the prisoners will really get their way.

http://democracynow.org - The largest prison work strike in U.S. history has entered its third week. Organizers report that as of last week at least 20 prisons in 11 states continued to protest, including in Alabama, California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Ohio, South Carolina and Washington. The Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee says at one point about 20,000 prisoners were on strike. With protest has come punishment. Several facilities have been put on lockdown, with prisoners kept in their cells and denied phone access both before and during the strike. Organizers have also been put in solitary confinement.
